139 STRAIGHT DAYS OF 10+ MILES PER DAY

This is the second time I intentioanlly came to Jim Thorpe, PA. when it was raining. I love the rain, I love that it puts us “all in the same boat.” Some people hate it, but as you can see, I dig it.

Running is easy, but running in heavy rain, through flooded trails, on a cold and windy day, well.. that’s hard.

But I made it downtown, got a glazed donut and coffee, and ran back to my car. Seven miles total.

Was I wet? Totally. Was it uncomfortable? Sure, it’d feel nicer to stay home and watch football, I guess.

But you know what feels like magic after an effort like this? A warm shower. Homemade coffee. All the little things feel bigger when you do the uncomfortable stuff.

And I got myself a DJI Osmo Action 6, exactly for days like this – rainy, miserable day. My running set up right now keeps my iPhone tucked away, and I really hate using my phone more than I have to. Sure, it takes nice photos and videos, but I hate seeing all that other stuff, which is why I knew I wanted a dedicated camera for these sorts of adventures.

IT AIN’T HARD, BUT IT’S HARD TO DO

A four mile trail run got me to 10 miles, but I wanted 12. I was literally in bed, but I got up, put on some shorts, and set off into the night.

It’s not hard, but it’s hard to do.

I wanted to be able to write down that I did 12 miles, two days in a row.

Walking isn’t hard. But getting started is hard. Getting out the door. Remembering the gloves. All the tiny details, the decisions that need to be made – they all add up.

It ain’t hard, but it’s hard to do.

Today is day 135 of walking 10+ miles per day.

ANOTHER 80 MILE WEEK

About 82 miles this week, maybe 15 of that ran. About 25.5 hours of movement on sidewalks, in the woods, across parking lots, in the streets. A daily average over 11.5 miles. Just over 3.5 hours per day on my feet instead of on my computer, or scrolling through something on my phone.

Had some ankle pain earlier in the week, but thankfully that’s gone away. I think it came from some quicker downhill trail running, so I’m gonna ease off that a bit, as I want to make sure I can continue this streak, as I’m at 132 days right now, which brings me to 1,516 miles.

Every day, since May 26, 2026. Five days after my 50th birthday.

WALKING 10+ MILES FOR 115 DAYS

NIGHT TIME WALKING

Walked 20.12 miles today, a nice way to top off 115 days straight of walking / running 10+ miles per day. Someone asked me today if I’m on GLP-1, and I just told them, “nope, just walking and eating less snacks.”

I’ve always seemed to find time to look at my phone for 3+ hours a day, first thing in the morning, while warming up my coffee, in the evening – all those moments just add up, just like jetting outside for a half-mile walk here and there.

92 DAYS OF 10+ MILES PER DAY

I’ve hit 92 days of walking at least 10 miles per day, covering 1034.8 miles which is about 11.24 miles per day. I’m down about 18lbs., and finally able to fit back into my medium hoodies which is good news since the evenings are getting cooler.

At 50, I’ll take it.

The photo above is from a Saturday morning adventure, when I woke up at 4am to meet my friend at their camp site. It involved navigating a 1000′ climb up the Appalaican Trail in the dark, and it was fucking fantastic.

I’m running some of these miles here and there, but not many. I’ll do a 3 mile run here and there. The other day I did an 8 mile trail run. But I’m taking that very slow, since I’m having a lot of fun “just” walking, and also I don’t wanna get injured.

All this walking takes about 3.5 hours per day, which sounds like a lot, but not if you consider some people have screen times of 5+ hours a day. I don’t walk all these miles at once. I duck out in between Zoom calls, and while waiting for client approvals in Asana. The other day I was going to a party with a friend in the afternoon, so I buckled up and went out for a 5 mile walk at around 7am. Got home, ate a little, then went back out at 9am for the remaining 5 miles.

I’ve burned through two pairs of shoes already, settling in nicely with some Altras. I started out just using the the Apple Health tracking on my iPhone, but I’ve since started tracking each walk with my Coros running watch. Less ambient walking, really, so walking around the grocery store and such doesn’t count, but that’s okay.

WALKING INTO THE NIGHT

Late start for my walks today, and also oppressively hot. This meant two trips to the gym, four miles walking each time, which took about an hour and 10 minutes for each. Still didn’t wrap up all my walking till 9:30pm.

Today is 73 days in a row, and I’ve covered 823 miles so far since May 26th.

70 DAYS OF WALKING 10+ MILES PER DAY

Today was day 70 of walking at least 10 miles per day. Since May 26th I’ve walked 787.6 miles, about 11.2 miles per day.

I start most days with a three mile walk, which takes about an hour.

After I get through some of my work, I try to get in another three mile walk before noon.

My afternoons are still up in the air, but my best days I get in another 2-3 miles before 4pm, then another 3+ miles in the evening, usually at a park or some trails.

I do run some of these miles, but not much. Maybe 10-15 miles per week. I was able to run 30-ish miles per week a few years back, but then I’d get some sort of injury and just grind to a halt. I wanted to do something like this because it felt more sustainable.

I bought two new pairs of shoes during these 70 days, and I’m definitely going to need to buy another soon. Right now I’m fond of the Brooks Men’s Ghost Max 3 Neutral Running & Walking Shoe.

TEN SNOWY MILES

Woke up to a few inches of snow outside my window, and thought of how difficult it’ll be to walk10 miles. Sidewalks filled with snow and ice slow down my walking pace, and sometimes forces me into the road, which isn’t ideal.

This photo was from my first walk, around 9:11am. I had a Zoom call at 10am, and knew I had to get some distance in before that. It was just 0.5 miles, but every bit helps for later in the day.

It’s a Saturday, so town is pretty quiet, aside from snow blowers and plow trucks.

I walked through the college campus twice. Doubled back on some streets. Slipped a few times, but never fell.

The photo above was from my 2nd walk of the day, at 1:17pm, just after an hour-long live stream I did on Substack talking about Break Up With Social Media Day.

After this walk I was at 4.46 miles for the day, with 5.54 miles to go.

My third walk of the day was my longest. When I set out at 4:17pm it was 33°F, but 84% humidity, so I felt comfortable wearing my new shorts (Path Projects, sooo nice).

The photo above was at 4:34pm, with the sun setting nicely.

By 5:07pm there was a good amount of steam fog, where moisture evaporates off the snow. Can’t really tell from this photo, but it was wonderful.

This walk was 4.17 miles in one hour and 15 minutes, which brought me to 8.55 miles for the day.

I stopped at my house, grabbed something to drink, and checked my mileage: just 1.4 miles to go. I went back out for my fourth walk of the day, which took about 30 minutes, bringing me to 10.1 miles total.

Total walking time was three hours, six minutes.

According to my Apple Health app that’s 24,628 steps.

So 17 days into the new year I’m at 177.3 miles, about 10.4 miles per day.

MAKING PEACE WITH THE DAY

Walking is so good, from Kate McCusker in The Guardian:

These days, walking is, for me, the exercise equivalent of hiding vegetables in my mashed potatoes: suddenly I’ve covered four miles in one stretch without really noticing. In the evenings, walking 90 minutes home from work is like making peace with the day, however good, bad or unremarkable it might have been.

A 90 minute walk in no joke. (via rebecca toh)
